Backup and export

Exporting your data

The Research app stores all your items and notes locally on your computer.

Understanding your data storage

The Research App stores your data in two main locations:

Research Items:

  • Location: $HOME/UNMS/Research folder
  • Contents: Your PDF files, saved web pages, and other media

Database:

  • Location: [App Support Directory]/research.un.ms/data.sqlite
  • Contents: Your annotations, highlights, categories, and other organizational data

Backing up your data

To create a comprehensive backup:

  1. Copy the entire $HOME/UNMS/Research folder to your backup location.
  2. Locate your app support directory:
    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/
    • Windows: C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\
    • Linux: ~/.config/
  3. Copy the research.un.ms/data.sqlite file to your backup location.

We recommend performing regular backups, especially before major updates or if you're working on critical research.

Exporting your research

Your PDF files and saved web pages can be accessed directly from the $HOME/UNMS/Research folder.

Importing backups

If you need to restore from a backup:

  1. Close the Research App
  2. Replace the $HOME/UNMS/Research folder with your backed-up version
  3. Replace the data.sqlite file in the app support directory with your backup
  4. Restart the Research App

Best practices

  • Regularly schedule backups
  • Store backups in a separate location (e.g., external drive, cloud storage)
  • After major app updates, create a new backup to ensure compatibility

Remember, your research is valuable. Regular backups ensure you never lose your important work and insights.
